MANATEE -- A 59-year-old Bradenton man was struck and killed early Monday while trying to walk U.S. 301 in Ellenton, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

About 6:36 a.m., King Earley was walking from the south side of U.S. 301 to the north near Franklin Avenue when he was struck and killed by a westbound pickup truck driven by a 60-year-old man.

FHP said Earley was crossing the roadway in a non-lighted area and not within a pedestrian crosswalk.

The driver saw Earley and began to brake, but he was unable to avoid hitting Earley.
