Pirates' ace Mirabella fans 20 in 1-0 victory

Courtney Mirabella stuck out 20 and just missed a perfect game, allowing only one hit, to lead the Braden River softball team to a 1-0 victory over Texas Ridge Point on Thursday in opening round play of the Sarasota Spring Break Softball Tournament at Sarasota High.

The only hit off Mirabella was a bloop single with one out in the seventh inning. She had struck out 18 of the 19 batters she faced until that point.

Freshman Bethaney Keen doubled in the third to drive in the Pirates' run. Ashley Allard, who reached on a walk, scored on the play.

Mirabella (7-1) has 130 strikeouts in 59 innings.

OWEN J. ROBERTS (PA.) 9, MANATEE 5 -- The host Hurricanes surrendered eight runs in the first two innings and never recovered against a team from Pottstown, Pa.

Mariah Wise went 4-for-4 with two stolen bases for Manatee (7-4), which opens Sarasota tournament play at 3 p.m. Friday against Hillsborough County's Riverview. Therese Byrne, Brittany Sessions and Peyton Varela each had two hits for the Canes.

Baseball

SAINT STEPHEN'S 15, MANATEE HEAT 2 (6) -- Nick Runde and Garrett Barnes teamed up to pitch the Falcons (7-4) past the host HEAT.

Runde got the win, giving up an earned run and two hits, while striking out five, in four innings. Barnes threw two scoreless frames.

Parker Shanahan and Joe Schneider had three hits apiece, and Jake Westberry knocked in four runs for Saint Stephen's.

The two teams also finished a Feb. 28 delayed by darkness. Colin Yates' single scored Cam Tally with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 6-5 Falcons victory.

CARDINAL MOONEY 3, BAYSHORE 0 -- Austin Bingham fired a five-hit shutout to lift the visiting Cougars (7-3) past the Bruins (5-7) on Wednesday night.

Jerad Paparella had three hits for Bayshore.

Girls tennis

OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY 5, SAINT STEPHEN'S 2 -- The host Thunder (7-0) kept its perfect record behind Caroline Dailey, M'Balia Bangoura, Alana Sherman and Cheyenne Kerekes in singles matches. Dailey and Bangoura were winners in doubles.

Boys tennis

SAINT STEPHEN'S 7, OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY 0 -- The Falcons enjoyed seven straight-set wins to beat the host Thunder (5-2) move to 11-1.

Bernando Sanson, William DeQuant, Zach Bessette and Brian Berdusco each won a singles match and was part of a doubles victory. Peter Moore also won for Saint Stephen's.
