Manatee senior sprinter Brandon Carnes won the 100- and 200-meter dashes Friday night at the 11-team Hurricane Invitational, leading the Canes to a third-place finish in the team standings.

Carnes, who placed fourth at the state meet in the 100 dash last season, won the 100 in 11.08 seconds and the 200 in 22.37 seconds.

Manatee's Derrick Calloway easily won the shot put with an effort of 55 feet, 2.5 inches, more than 10 feet ahead of his nearest competitor. Calloway is the defending state champion in the event.

North Port won the boys team event with 183.5 points, 50 more than second-place Riverview. Manatee scored 100 for third place.

Among other area competitors, Bayshore distance runner Canaan Meester-Kitterman claimed victories in the 1,600 and 3,200 runs. He won the 1,600 in 4:34.15 and the 3,200 in 10:06.06.

In the girls competition, Manatee boasted a pair of double winners in thrower Teirra Wetherell and hurdler O'Neesa Shaw on the way to a second-place finish as a team. Sarasota finished first in the team standings with 139.50 points. Manatee was second at 131 points, and Saint Stephen's was third at 102.5 points.

Wetherell won the shot put at 29-8.5 and the discus with a throw of 89-9, almost 13 feet ahead of the second-place finisher.

Shaw took first in the 100 hurdles in 17.60 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 50.94 seconds.

The Manatee 3,200 relay team of Katie Lanphere, Katreyna Zeppi, Maia Krebser and Jessica Jones took first place in 11:01.54.

For Saint Stephen's, Lauren Csubak won the 400 dash in 1 minute, 3.96 seconds. Jane Lindsay claimed the triple jump with an effort of 29 feet, 8 1/2 inches. The Saint Stephen's 1,600 relay team of Csubak, Alexis Sedillo, Gabrielle Woodruff and Hannah Howell finished first in 4:22.27.

Other area girls winners were Bayshore's Joy Norman (high jump, 5-0) and Lakewood Ranch's Cree Lotterer (pole vault, 8-6).

Juco baseball

STATE COLLEGE OF FLORIDA 5,POLK STATE COLLEGE 2 -- Manatee product Chase Sandberg ripped a two-run double to key a four-run fourth inning and lead the visiting Manatees past the Eagles in Suncoast Conference play.

Orlando Rivera went 2-for-5 and scored twice for SCF (22-5, 4-0). Manatees starter Robby Kalaf went seven innings and picked up the win. He allowed a run and five hits.

SCF will continue a three-game series against Polk State at 6 p.m. Monday at Robert C. Wynn Field. The Eagles are ranked No. 1 in the state.

Juco softball

STATE COLLEGE OF FLORIDA 11-8, ILLINOIS VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE 3-1 -- Ashley Burney homered and drove in seven runs during the host Manatees' doubleheader sweep.

Manatee product Taylor O'Quinn went the distance for the pitching victory in the first game, which was stopped after six innings. O'Quinn struck out 11 and allowed four hits and no earned runs.

Burney had two hits, including the home run, and drove in four. Jaice Metherall went 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs and scored twice. Dani-Lynn Darby had two hits and two RBIs, and Megan Tice homered.

In the second game, SCF (24-8) got three more RBIs from Burney, though she didn't have a hit. Laura Gavern doubled and scored twice. SCF pitchers Bailey Hamel, Kaira Robinson and Megan Schwietert combined a two-hitter.

Prep softball

BRADEN RIVER 4, SARASOTA 2 (12) -- Jessica Cadorette launched a two-run home run in the top of the 12th inning to lift the Pirates to a key Class 7A-District 11 victory over the Sailors late Friday night. Braden River ace Courtney Mirabella got the save.
