MANATEE -- A Port Charlotte woman was killed in a head-on collision Saturday about 15 miles east of Parrish, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
According to a news release, Mary Perkins, 65, was driving a Nissan Versa southbound on State Road 37, about two miles north of Wauchula Road at about 4:45 p.m. A Ford F-150 pickup, driven by Jason Dearth, 38, of Parrish, was heading north on the two-lane road.
The FHP says the pick-up truck applied its brakes for unknown reasons and entered the southbound lane. Perkins' car hit the pick-up nearly head-on. The pick-up caught fire after coming to a stop, the news release said.
Perkins was pronounced dead at the scene. Dearth was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
Charges are pending, the news release said.
