MANATEE -- A brush fire in East Manatee County shut down part of Waterline Road on Friday, according to East Manatee Fire Rescue.
Chief Byron Teates said there appeared to be a "short malfunction on a power transmission like that created a spark," sometime around 11 a.m.
Teates said there was about an "acre of heavy fuel" about a mile west of the water treatment plant at Lake Manatee.
"It's very dry in all of Manatee County and especially out east," Teates said.
According to the Florida Forest Service, Manatee County has a "very high" fire danger index.
Units were still on scene at 3 p.m., Teates said.
