Bradenton police take man into custody after standoff

BRADENTON -- A 57-year-old man was taken into custody after a standoff at an apartment complex with Bradenton police. No charges will be filed, police said.

About 8:12 p.m. Sunday, officers were dispatched to the parking lot of Manatee Memorial Hospital's emergency room in response to a report that an armed man was seeking medical assistance. But the man had fled by the time officers arrived, according to a police news release.

Shortly afterwards, officers located the man's unoccupied vehicle in the 1200 block of Carlton Arms Circle, off State Road 64 East.

Because they believed the man had a weapon, police secured the perimeter of the Carlton Arms apartments and called the department's SWAT officers and hostage negotiators to the scene.

Negotiations with the man continued until 2:42 a.m., when the man was recovered from the attic of an apartment and taken into protective custody.

No gun was found, and no criminal charges will be pursued against the man, whose name was not released.
