CLEARWATER -- A man distraught over an alleged affair his wife was having walked into her Largo office building Wednesday morning and fired several gunshots, including one into his stomach.
According to the Largo Police Department, Fred Michael Sumner, 52, is alive and remains hospitalized.
Authorities said Sumner entered the lobby of the BayView Pavillion Office Business Complex in the 1500 block of Lightwave Drive just before 9:30 a.m. with a handgun in his waistband.
Once inside, he pulled out the gun and began firing shots at the glass windows in the lobby, officials said. He then shot himself. He did not aim the weapon at any one person specifically officials said.
Sumner was transported by helicopter to an area hospital. His condition is not known. Officials said Sumner has been charged with criminal mischief and shooting within an occupied building.
There were no other injuries. Sumner's wife was not at work during the time of the shooting. She was located and notified of the shooting.
