Celebrate '70s soul with WBTT in Sarasota

Two years ago, the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe staged a tribute to R&B musicians from the '70s. "Soul Crooners,' which was created and directed by WBTT artistic director Nate Jacobs, proved wildly popular with audiences and got strong reviews from critics.

As song-packed as that show was, there are still plenty of great soulful songs from that glorious musical era that couldn't fit into "Soul Crooners." So now Jocobs is back with "Soul Crooners 2," which features the same charismatic characters, the same cast from the original show and lots more great music.

It opens tonight and runs for more than a month. But a lot of the performances are already sold out, especially early in the run, so if you don't act quickly you might have to wait for "Soul Crooners 3."

Details: Feb. 20-March 24 at the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, 1646 10th Way, Sarasota. Show times: 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets: $29.50. Information: 941-366-1505 or www.wbttsrq.com.
