Vin's People: New queen, princess crowning April 26

A drum roll, if you will, for the DeSoto Historical Society's 2013 Queen's Court.

The 10 young women vying for the crowns worn by reigning queen Lauren Routh and princess Alanna Massey are: McKinna Anderson, Manatee High School 2012, University of South Florida; Elizabeth Bazan, Palmetto 2012, State College of Florida; Megan Briggs, Lakewood Ranch 2011, SCF; Mariah Click, MHS 2012, SCF; Haley Geraldson, MHS 2012, SCF; Raegan Horne, Bayshore 2012, USF; Jewel Johnson, Bayshore 2009, SCF; Jennie Ozark, MHS 2009, Florida State; Alyssa Reed, MHS 2012, SCF; Jessica Woodard, MHS 2012, SCF.

Crowning is April 26.

n Big ups to Lauren Pierce. The Manatee School for the Arts senior and Heat dance team captain just got accepted at the University of Florida.

Fred and Lynn need more Gator gear.

n Speaking of UF, the Manatee County Gator Club's first Swamp Sale, a yard-sale to benefit its scholarship fund, is 7 a.m.-2 p.m., March 2 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 3200 Manatee Ave. W.

Items can be donated at any of the following collection times and places:

Saturday, 8 a.m.-noon: Ozark, Perron, & Nelson law office, 2816 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton.

March 1, 6-9 p.m.: Trinity United Methodist Church, 3200 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton.

n Bryce Johnson, a Valentine's Day baby, is 28.

n After more than 50 years of renting on Anna Maria Island every spring, Pirates pitching hero/broadcaster Steve Blass and wife Karen are now Bradenton homeowners.

And Pirates skipper Clint Hurdle and wife, Karla, are building a home on Holmes Beach.

n Doreen Eberley was just appointed the FDIC's director of risk management supervision in Washington, overseeing the FDIC operations in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, New York and San Francisco.

The 1981 Bayshore High alum is a graduate of Cornell University, has an MBA from Emory University's Goizueta Business School and has been with the Fed for 25 years.

n Kevin Neghandi, Channel 7 alum now with ESPN, tweeted he spent $9 on a Valentine's Day card for his wife. The card better be able to sing and dance at that price.

n JAM FEST 2, an all-day fundraiser for Manatee High's TV/radio production program begins noon Feb. 23 in the MHS courtyard. Tickets are $10 and available at MHS and participating bands.

Among them are Cordova, Forsaken Anthem, Collision Course, Dan Fox, Whiskey Blind, Katalyst and Big Daddy.
