Dog's vaccination records needed to help Manatee County dog bite victim avoid rabies shots

MANATEE -- A 14-year-old girl was attacked by a large dog, possibly a Saint Bernard, and suffered several bite wounds as she rode her bicycle in the 8200 block of 15th Street East north of Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport about 7 p.m. Tuesday, an official with Manatee Animal Services said.

The dog was on a leash but broke away from its owner to attack the teen. The owner regained control of the dog, put it into a dark-colored Toyota RAV 4 and drove away, a witness said.

Officials are asking that the owner of the dog contact Animal Services at 941-742-5933 with vaccination records for the dog. Otherwise, the bite victim will have to undergo a series of rabies shots.

The mother of the teen told the Bradenton Herald her No. 1 concern is helping her daughter avoid the rabies shots if possible.

"We have 10 days before she has to get the rabies shots," the mother said.

The attack was investigated by the Manatee County Sheriff's Office and Animal Services.
