Vatican says Pope Benedict XVI resigning on Feb. 28

VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican says that Pope Benedict XVI will resign on Feb. 28. The announcement Monday was a surprise.

Benedict has been head of the Catholic Church since May 2005, when he was elected by the church's cardinals to succeed Pope John Paul II.
