It's happening 2:30-8 p.m. today in the cafeteria at Southeast, 1200 37th Ave. E., Bradenton.

n On his way to celebrate 11 a.m. Mass last Sunday at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, Pastor Joe Connolly spotted several parishioners carrying full grocery bags toward church.

Joked the good padre, "Folks, I know my sermons are long, but ... "

n Don't forget national anthem tryouts 8 a.m. to noon Saturday for the Pittsburgh Pirates' 18 home spring training games.

Auditions aren't at McKechnie Field, as in years past, but Pirate City, 1701 27th St. E., Bradenton.

Singers are invited who can perform the Canadian national anthem -- Toronto visits March 13 -- or sing Spain's national anthem, "Marcha Real," for the March 5th World Baseball Classic exhibition with Spain.

n Demetrios' Spaghetti Night benefit raised $6,648 for chef Sergio Valdez, a longtime employee and his family.

He was injured in a car accident and is out of work for awhile.

More than 400 people showed up and ate up.

n Dylan Barakat made fall dean's list at the University of Central Florida. The 2010 Braden River High School alum is a junior majoring in sports and exercise science.

n Speaking of Braden River, big ups to director Traci Cristello and Black Pearls varsity captain Emily Harris, co-captain Caitlyn Mumma, Tori Denison, Avery Ellis, Jazminn Lucas, Erin Malcom, Ashley Miller, Kerri Ranck and Haleigh Roberts.

They won hip-hop and jazz at the National Dance Alliance Sunshine Classic in Lakeland.

n Margarida Phelan received an auspicious 18th birthday present last Saturday when the Manatee Sugar 'Canes co-captain and her teammates qualified in the national high kick prelims for Sunday's finals and a 10th-place finish at Disney.

n Herald sports guy and Yankees fan John Lembo and wife, Christina, named first-born Derek John.

The lad arrived Feb. 2, the same number as pop's favorite Yankee and junior's namesake.
