So why would the area's top high school athletes wait around to make their college choices official on National Signing Day? Beginning at 8 a.m. at Southeast and Cardinal Mooney, athletes put pen to paper, signing with -- and donning the caps of -- their favorite schools. By just after noon, 43 of our finest had signed national letters of intent, including such notables as Manatee football standouts Cord Sandberg and Derrick Calloway, Palmetto jack of all trades Cory Crawford and former state champion runner Olivia Ortiz of Lakewood Ranch.
