LOCAL ROUNDUP | Girls basketball postseason begins Monday

Published: January 28, 2013

Three area girls basketball teams are in action Monday as district tournaments begin with quarterfinal action.

Third-seeded Braden River will host sixth-seeded Manatee in a Class 7A-District 11 quarterfinal at 7 p.m., and fourth-seeded Palmetto will play host to Largo in a Class 6A-District 12 quarterfinal.

The area's only top seed is Cardinal Mooney in Class 3A-District 10, but that is a four-team tournament made up entirely of local squads.

Southeast (Class 5A-District 12) and Lakewood Ranch (6A-12) are second seeds and are already in the semifinals. The Seminoles are hoping for a rematch against nemesis St. Petersburg Lakewood, which is the top seed in 5A-12. The two teams would meet at Southeast in the district final on Friday if they win their semifinals.

The top two teams in each district advance to next week's region tournament.
