Dieter's Sod Service expands operations

MANATEE -- Dieter's Sod Service Inc. is expanding into the landscape services market.

Carole and Dieter Zoellner, founders of the Manatee County company, recently sold part of their ownership to the Bay Breeze Group, an agricultural company based in Hillsborough County.

"The expansion into the landscape services market is a natural progression allowing us to offer all inclusive, one-stop shopping for our customers," Dieter Zoellner said.

Under the new name, Dieter's Sod & Landscaping, the company will continue to operate throughout Manatee, Sarasota and surrounding counties.

Humana opens office on 14th Street West

BRADENTON -- Humana has opened a storefront sales and customer service office in Bradenton at 6036 14th St. W.

The Bradenton office joins others Humana has recently opened in Tampa and Clearwater in an effort to move to retail centers closer to where its members and potential members live and work.

The Bradenton sales and service office is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The location is staffed by Humana MarketPoint sales representatives who provide guidance and service to area residents and Humana members with questions about choosing and using their health benefits and health insurance, including Medicare, individual, vision, dental and life coverage.

The office staff holds regular Humana Medicare member orientation and information seminars to help new and renewing members understand their health plans and maximize their benefits. Local companies involved in McKechnie makeover

BRADENTON -- More than 80 percent of the businesses and workers involved in the $10 million renovation of McKechnie Field are from the Tampa Bay area, the Pittsburgh Pirates said.

NDC Construction, located in Bradenton, is the construction manager for the project. Fawley Bryant Architects, with offices in Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch, designed the project. Of the 39 businesses that have played a role in the renovation, 12 are from Manatee County, 11 are from Sarasota County, five are based in Pinellas County, and four are located in Hillsborough County.

Four additional Florida companies bring the total of in-state businesses used to 36.

The total number of workers on the project to date is 224. In-state workers account for 95 percent of the total project work force, with 87 percent coming from the Tampa Bay Region, and 63 percent coming from businesses in Manatee and Sarasota


Wm F. McDonough Plumbing of Sarasota handled the extensive plumbing needs of the renovation, Duncan Seawall of Sarasota constructed the boardwalk that will provide fans with outfield seating for the first time, and All Steel Consultants of Palmetto was contracted for structural steel, the Pirates organization said.

Goodwill Manasota named for Charity of Choice initiative

MANATEE -- Goodwill Industries Manasota Inc. has been named by the Sarasota-based Canada Med Services/Discount Prescription Services as one of 32 regional non-profit organizations to participate in its 2013 "Charity of Choice" initiative.

This philanthropic program will help Goodwill Manasota "expand its services in the community, helping more people achieve self-sufficiency and a better quality of life," says Bob Rosinsky, president of Goodwill Manasota.

The Charity of Choice program was created to acknowledge regional non-profit organizations that best represent the area's rich diversity of cultural, educational, health, animal rescue and other community outreach initiatives. When a customer places a prescription medication order with Canada Med Services, a donation is made to the customer's selected charity.

So far, more than 450 customers have elected to participate in the program, helping raise upwards of $3,000 in 2012.

Participating organizations include ArtCenter Manatee, Pines of Sarasota Foundation Inc., Sarasota Ballet, Manatee Players, Mote Marine Laboratory, Historic Spanish Point, All Faiths Food Bank, Women's Resource Center, United Way Suncoast, Tidewell Hospice and the Asolo Rep, among others.
