Girls soccer | Palmetto dominates St. Petersburg Lakewood in Class 3A-10 semifinal

Published: January 18, 2013

PALMETTO -- Aside from earning a win, Palmetto girls soccer coach Matt Foy wanted to see his Tigers accomplish another goal during Thursday's Class 3A-District 10 semifinal.

Score before half.

It took less than two minutes for his team to oblige, as Jade Adams' quick goal ignited Palmetto in a 6-0 victory.

Top-seeded Palmetto (11-3-3) hosts second-seeded Seminole Osceola at 7 p.m. Friday in the championship

game.

"Last time we played (Lakewood), it took until halftime to score a goal," Foy said. "That was our biggest thing -- to try and get a quick goal on them and try and get the win."

Adams scored another goal just before half. Tanya Campos netted a hat trick, and Yasmin Montufar also scored for the Tigers.

The news wasn't all good: Nohely Pineda, who scored a hat trick during the Jan. 11 quarterfinal and added an assist Thursday, suffered a ligament strain in her knee.

"We were hoping for no injuries," Foy said.

Palmetto also will be without Faith Rewis and Jenna Steininger on Friday night. They are starters who scheduled recruiting trips for the weekend.

"I think we'll be all right. We've been practicing really hard out here," Foy said, "and I think we're going to be fine."

Foy expects everyone back for Wednesday's region quarterfinal.

Palmetto and Osceola played to a scoreless tie earlier this year at Harllee Stadium, and Foy expects a tough match Friday night as well as he tries to win his first district title in six years as the team's coach.

"We've been the bridesmaid," he said. "I'm sick of being that. (Friday) we have a chance to finally win one of those."
