Palmetto man struck and killed while crossing roadway

A Palmetto man was struck and killed while trying to cross 17th Street East Friday evening, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

According to a news release, Martin Ochoa-Hernandez, 42, was attempting to cross the road just west of 16th Avenue East, at about 6:18 p.m. when a women driving a Mitsubushi Galant approached him heading east in the left lane of 17th Street East.

The driver unsuccessfully tried attempted to avoid Ochoa-Hernandez but hit him with the right front of her vehicle, the FHP said.

The driver was treated for minor injuries at Manatee Memorial Hospital. Charges are pending, the FHP report said.
