Baseball: Grapefruit League schedule unveiled

TALLAHASSEE -- The new amenities at McKechnie Field in Bradenton are among the top attractions to the 125th anniversary season of spring training in Florida as Gov. Rick Scott unveiled the 263-game schedule on Tuesday.

The spring home of the Pittsburgh Pirates since 1969, McKechnie Field will feature an additional 2,000 seats, a 19,000-square-foot wooden boardwalk with tiki bar, covered bleacher seats, a building in center field that includes a concession stand, and a luxury, two-level party deck in left field that accommodates up to 80 people.

The Pirates open the spring season with an intrasquad scrimmage Feb. 22.

"Major League Baseball's Spring Training in Florida is one of our nation's gems," Scott said in a press release. "Every spring, athletes come to Florida to train and baseball fans throughout America visit Florida to enjoy great games, our wonderful climate and many tourist destinations. Spring training also generates more than $700 million for our communities ever year, meaning more jobs and opportunities for Florida families. With the 2013 training season almost here, I encourage families everywhere to attend a game in Florida, and take the time to enjoy one of America's greatest pastimes."

The 2012 Grapefruit League season broke an attendance record with 6,965 fans per game at 233 games. The 38-day schedule begins on Feb. 21 with the Boston Red Sox hosting a pair of college teams at Jet Blue Stadium in Fort Myers and concludes March 30. The first full day of scheduled games is Feb. 23 with eight games on tap.

Other highlights:

n The American League champion Detroit Tigers return to Lakeland for the 77th year, representing the longest-standing relationship between a team and community.

n Dunedin will host the Toronto Blue Jays, who made a splash with the addition of Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey and several other big-name players.

Golf: Dustin Johnson wins PGA opener

KAPALUA, Hawaii -- Dustin Johnson ended a windy week with a wild ride that carried him to the first win of the PGA Tour season.

Despite hitting two drives into native areas that cost him three shots, Johnson never lost the lead at Kapalua. He closed with a 5-under 68 for a four-shot victory in the Tournament of Champions, though it was up for grabs with five holes remaining.

Steve Stricker came within a fraction of an inch of tying for the lead until his birdie putt peeled away from the cup on the 13th hole, which Johnson chopped up for a double bogey. With only a one-shot lead, Johnson pitched in from 50 feet in front of the 14th green to restore his three-shot lead, and Stricker never challenged him after that. Johnson, who finished at 16-under 203, won for the sixth straight season.

ELSEWHERE -- The next time Notah Begay is inside the ropes on the PGA Tour, he'll be holding a microphone instead of a golf club. Begay starts a new line of work this week at the Sony Open as a full-time member of the broadcast team for NBC Sports and Golf Channel. He will be a walking course reporter at Waialae Country Club.

NHL: Sabres sorry for lockout

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- First, came the apology. And then, Buffalo Sabres president Ted Black delivered a vow to the team's hockey-starved fans.

With the four-month NHL lockout nearly over, Black said it's time for the team to get to work on delivering Buffalo a winner.

"On behalf of the Pegulas and the Sabres, we do apologize that fans have to go through this," Black said, referring to team owner Terry Pegula and his wife, Kim. "We're back in business. ... And we're going to do whatever we can to get back on track to the mission that Terry has laid out for us: And that's to win the Stanley Cup."

Cycling: Armstrong to do interview with Oprah

LOS ANGELES -- Lance Armstrong has agreed to a rare televised interview with Oprah Winfrey that will air next week.

According to a release posted on Oprah's website on Tuesday, Armstrong will address allegations that he used performance-enhancing drugs during his cycling career.

Armstrong has strongly denied the doping charges that led to him being stripped of his seven Tour de France titles, but The New York Times reported Friday he has told associates he is considering admitting the use of PEDS.

Oprah's interview with Armstrong will air on Jan. 17.

ELSEWHERE -- The chief of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency tells CBS's "60 Minutes Sports" that a representative for Armstrong offered the agency a "donation" in excess of $150,000 several years before a USADA investigation led to Armstrong being stripped of seven Tour de France titles.

Tennis: Radwanska wins 6th in row in Sydney

SYDNEY -- Top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland extended her unbeaten start to the season to six matches with a 6-4, 6-3 win over 42-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm at the Sydney International.
