BRADENTON — An arrest has been made in Manatee County’s first homicide of the year, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

Paul Grieco, 16, was shot to death about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at a Chevron gas station, 1832 Manatee Ave. E.

Danny Waiters, 17, has been charged with homicide in the case.

Grieco and two other men, both 20, were driving to the gas station to purchase some items when they were approached by Waiters, according to the sheriff’s office. Waiters allegedly pointed a handgun through the window of the victims’ vehicle. Multiple shots were fired at the victims, according to the sheriff’s office.

Grieco was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital, where he died from his injuries. Another victim was taken to Blake Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The third victim fled the scene.

The homicide is the first investigated by the multi-agency Manatee County Homicide Investigation Unit, with a Bradenton Police Department detective taking the lead on the case, which occurred in the city limits. Detectives were able to speak with the injured victim at the hospital after the incident.

Additional charges and arrests are expected, officials said.

Video surveillance shows several witnesses nearby.
