MANATEE -- A Bradenton man Wednesday accidentally shot himself in the arm as he was preparing to clean his gun, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

The shooting happened about 9:30 a.m. in the backyard of a residence in the 4500 block of 31st Lane East, according to a news release.

The weapon was identified as a Diamond Back .380-caliber handgun.

The man was struck in the upper right arm, and the bullet did not exit. Paramedics took the injured man to a local hospital for treatment, the sheriff's office said.
