MANATEE - Four motorists were arrested and charged with driving under the influence and 53 citations were issued during a New Year's Eve DUI operation.
The Manatee County Sheriff's Office ran the operation from 5:30 p.m. Monday through 3 a.m. Tuesday in areas all over the county, according to a sheriff's office report.
Of the 11 total arrests made, four were for DUI, five for other misdemeanors and two for felonies.
Of the 53 citations issued, 28 were for unlawful speed, four were for seat belt violations, two for red light violations, three were summons and 16 were for other traffic violations, the report states.
There were also eight written warnings.
Annually, more than 17,000 people are killed and another 305,000 injured in the nation as a result of impaired drivers, the report states. Studies show the average DUI driver commits this violation 80 times a year, which breaks down to once every four or five nights, according to the report.
