A couple from Bradenton were among five people killed in a Christmas Eve traffic crash in Knox County, Ky.

According to WKYT-TV, the accident happened around 5:30 p.m. Monday near the community of Flat Lick.

Police say 31-year-old David Vanderpool of Williamsburg was traveling on U.S. 25E when he lost control of his vehicle, went airborne after hitting a median, and struck a southbound car head-on.

Vanderpool was killed, as well as the occupants of the other vehicle: 61-year-old Gary Caldwell and 58-year-old Patricia Caldwell of Putney, Ky., and 29-year-old Julia Robinson and 30-year-old Brent Robinson of Bradenton.

The highway was closed for about five hours as officials reconstructed the accident.

Police say alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
