Published: December 18, 2012

MANATEE -- It was "Bob Sweat Day" on Tuesday at the Manatee County Commission.

The long-time Manatee County supervisor ofeections was honored by the commission as he finishes out 28 years as supervisor.

He is retiring from the post in order to go fishing, he has said.

"It's been an honor to serve for 28 years," said Sweat, who was accompanied by his family and appeared resplendent in a red, white and blue tie.

Commissioners showered praise on Sweat for his long record of problem-free elections, but the modest Sweat credited his staff, saying, "They are really the unsung heroes in the trenches."

A new supervisor of elections, Republican Mike Bennett, was elected Nov. 6.
