A look at what Manatee residents get in government benefits

Out of the 131,318 households in Manatee County in the past 12 months:

-- 54,297, or 41.3 percent, received Social Security.

-- 3,548, or 2.7 percent, received Supplemental Security Income.

-- 1,897, or 1.4 percent, received cash public assistance.

-- 9,328, or 7.1 percent, received food stamps.

Also, of the more than $13.3 billion in personal income in Manatee in 2011, the most recent year available, almost $2.6 billion, or 20 percent, came in the form of a government transfer payment, like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid or food stamps or other benefits.
