MANATEE -- A burglary suspect was arrested after a police officer witnessed him breaking into a car parked at a Bradenton apartment complex, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
About 2:40 a.m. Wednesday, a Bradenton police officer saw a man later identified as Matthew B. Smith walking away from a car with an opened door parked at the Harbor Point Apartments, 4510 70th St. W. The officer exited his car and walked past Smith. Once behind a building, the officer kept an eye on the man, who then walked backed towards the car with the opened door, according to a news release.
Smith "then looked in the BPD patrol car, possibly to ensure it was empty," the report states.
Smith then entered the car and left with a bag in his hand. The officer detained Smith, according to the sheriff's office.
The owner of the car confirmed her car had been burglarized.
The sheriff's office took over the case since the apartments are in unincorporated Manatee.
Smith, 27, faces a charge of a burglary. He is being held on $5,000 bond at the Manatee County jail.
