Bradenton's Mickey Hooke capped an impressive 2012 with a new 5K road race time of 17 minutes, 24.30 seconds at the Florida International Senior Games & State Championships on Saturday in Lakeland.

Hooke completed the course more than two minutes faster than his nearest competitor to shatter a record that had stood since 1998 and also claimed the gold medal in the 50-54 age group.

"I made it a goal, at the beginning of this year, to set a new record in this race," Hooke said in a news release. "This is my last race of the year."

Hooke ran 41 5K road races in 25 different Florida cities in 2012.
