MANATEE -- A man was taken to Manatee County Jail today, facing two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, discharging a firearm from a moving vehicle, and using a firearm while under the influence of alcoholic beverages, according to the Manatee County Sheriffs Office.
A couple reported to investigators they were headed west-bound in the 8100 block of State Road 70 East in their GMC SUV and started to change lanes when a white Dodge Challenger approached from behind at a high rate of speed just after midnight, according to a sheriff's report.
After the traffic light changed, both vehicles continued to drive west bound on S.R. 70.
It is alleged that the Challenger pulled next to the GMC and the driver produced a silver firearm, pointed it at the victim and discharged it while their vehicles were in motion.
Deputies located the Challenger and took Mark Shapiro into custody without incident. No one was injured during this incident.
Anyone with information about a crime is asked to call the Manatee County Sheriffs Office at 941-747-3011 or Crime Stoppers at 866-634-TIPS (8477).
