The Players Theatre of Sarasota continues its Broadway Season with the classic family show "Annie" opening today.
A Tony Award Winner for Best Musical in 1977 and the basis for the hit film of the same name, it's the endearing story about little orphan Annie (played by Hannah Beatt) and her adventure to find her parents with help from dog Sandy (played by Holly the dog).
The cast also includes Jgar Hellwig (Daddy Warbucks), Shelley Whiteside (Grace Ferrell) and Terri Solomon (Miss Hannigan). Orphans are played by Eva Bayer, Kaity Cairo, Samantha Crawford, Emma Diner, Sarah Johnson, Amanda Lade, Lily Mancini, Jillian Park, Alanna Rife, Grace Roe, Lilly Mae Stewart and Claudia Young.
The creative team is Bob Trisolini (director/choreographer) and Bobby Brader (musical director) with Leona Collesano (stage manager). The set is designed by Michael Gray and lights by David Upton.
"Producing 'Annie' at our theater is a no brainer. It's clear to me as I see the classes here at the theater that there is talent and energy abounding," said Jeffery Kin, artistic director, in a statement.
"How can you not look at one of our dance classes or youth acting classes and not say 'How can I harness this?' So, the idea of the musical 'Annie' gracing our stage for the holidays was an easy one. Our audiences are going to be Annie-struck!"
Details: Dec. 6-23, The Players Theatre, 838 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Tickets: $25; $12 for students. Information: 941-365-2494 or www.theplayers.org.
