Gunman mugs pedestrian in Palmetto

MANATEE -- A gunman late Monday pistol-whipped and robbed a pedestrian in Palmetto, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

About 11:30 p.m., the victim was walking in the 200 block of 17th Street East, Palmetto, when he was approached from behind by an unknown man armed with a handgun, according to a news release.

"The suspect struck the victim in the head with the handgun and took his cell phone, cash and then fled on foot," the report states.

The victim suffered only minor injuries, according to the sheriff's office.
