MANATEE -- A bicyclist was critically injured Saturday afternoon when he collided with a vehicle while attempting to cross Cortez Road in Bradenton, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

About 2:43 p.m., the 25-year-old disregarded a "do not cross" signal and failed to use the crosswalk near the intersection of Cortez Road and U.S. 41, a news release states.

As the cyclist began to cross the eastbound lanes, he entered the path of a vehicle that struck his right side.

He was ejected from his bicycle, landing on the vehicle's hood and windshield.

The man, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to Blake Medical Center with critical injuries, FHP reports.

Neither the driver nor four passengers of the vehicle were injured.

No charges have been filed.
