Shufflin' | A salute to Ellenton's Dave Minnich

November 27, 2012

On Nov. 19 at Mixed Doubles at Bradenton, the Florida Shuffleboard Association Centennial Committee honored Dave Minnich, now a resident of Ridgewood in Ellenton.

Ken Offenther, of the Southeast Coast District, presented the coveted Centennial Pin to Minnich, a past president of the Florida Shuffleboard Association.

A member of the FSA Hall of Fame since 2004, Dave and his wife, Sue, were Hallmark dealers in Pennsylvania before discovering shuffleboard here in Florida.

Dave Minnich still attends state meetings and continues to influence policy. He has often shepherded newer players generously, and this column noted in January 2004 that in Minnich's acceptance remarks at the Hall of Fame Banquet, he emphasized the need for all shufflers to try to get more amateurs into the sport.

Thanks, Dave, and congratulations.

Tournament results

n Southwest Coast District players only placed in one tournament last week, FL P-8B, Mixed Doubles at Bradenton, with 11 of 16 places from our District. Main: 1. Marilyn & Jerry Everett, 2. Mike & Joyce Marquis, 3. Jim Bailey-Judy Taylor, 4. Pat Batdorff-Ralph Lozano. Consolation: 1. Jim Miller, 2. Ann & Walt Wedel.

Future tournaments

n Today is the second day of FL P-9A at Hawthorne and P-9B at Boynton Beach. It's also the second day of FL A-5 at Lakeland, State Sponsored Singles.

n Thursday at Bradenton SWCD D-8, M/L Doubles.

n Friday, SWCD A-5 at Bradenton, District Ams/Any Doubles.

n Dec. 3, FL P-10 at Lakeland, Open M/L Doubles and FL A-6 at Clearwater, Any Ams/Any Doubles.

State Ams and District Ams can earn move-up points in Monday State Amateur Tournaments where registration is often modest with no pros in sight!

Notable

n Mt. Vernon Shuffle Club, a newer member of SWCD, is reportedly advancing, with rejuvenated courts, recent purchases of beads, cues, etc., and more players entering competition beyond the park. Welcome aboard.

n Players traveling should watch the schedule for availability of lunches. Trailer Estates National Doubles in January and FL A-12 on Jan. 14 at Lakeland are erroneously marked Lunch in the PREVIEW. Neither Club offers lunch nowadays. Sorry.

n June 24-July 6, Jim and Beth Allen are organizing a trip to Europe for the Norwegian National Tournament and Russian National Tournament. The Russian extension is optional. Much sightseeing in both nations plus two tourneys. Both trips near $10,000 per couple. Not bad for so much, so far away. Info at jballen418@aol.com. We have traveled with them with good results.

n Reminder: Clubs wishing to attend or host shuffle schools, contact Joyce Marquis at 914-345-4777.

Happy shuffling.
