Saint Stephen's sophomore Ellie Berdusco not only made the medal stand for the first time at the Class 1A state swim meet, she got to the top.
In her fourth trip to the state meet, Berdusco won the 500-yard freestyle final in a time of 4 minutes, 47.17 seconds on Saturday night at the Central Florida YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando.
Berdusco turned in the third-best time in the 500 freestyle and the sixth-best time in the 200-yard freestyle during Saturday's preliminaries. She finished fifth in the 200 freestyle finals in 1:49.77.
The top six finishers in each event receive medals.
Cardinal Mooney's Matthew O'Donnell also won a state title in the 500 freestyle. He finished in 4:29.51. O'Donnell also qualifed for the finals in the 100 backstroke.
The Saint Stephen's 200 freestyle relay of Berdusco, Kristi and Lauri Schleicher and Kristen Brockett recorded the 14th-best time and will compete in the consolation finals.
