Take a family-friendly roller coaster ride with Sarasota Orchestra

Published: November 1, 2012

The Sarasota Orchestra invites children of all ages on a sonic roller coaster ride on Sunday.

Maestro Andrew Lane and the Sarasota Orchestra's "A Musical Journey Featuring Peter and the Wolf" opens with the first movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's famous "Fifth Symphony."

Then, during contemporary composer/violinist Matthew Naughtin's "Rollercoaster," the music will serve as the soundtrack for video footage taken from the front seat of SeaWorld Orlando's Kraken.

The program closes with Sergei Prokofiev's timeless masterpiece "Peter and the Wolf." This children's story from 1936 with music and text by Prokofiev introduces young audiences to the magic of musical storytelling as they experience Peter's adventures with a wolf on the prowl.

Lori White, superintendent of schools for Sarasota County, will narrate this classic tale.

Details: 2 and 3:30 p.m., Nov. 4, The Beatrice Friedman Symphony Center's Holley Hall, 709 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Tickets: $10 (adults), $5 (children). Details: 941-953-3434 or www.sarasotaorchestra.org
