PUNTA GORDA -- Manatee High senior Shiloh MaGann has qualified for the 3A regional competition in Tarpon Springs on Friday.
MaGann finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke in the 2012 3A District Meet in Punta Gorda to advance, said Manatee High Boys and Girls Swimming Coach Cyndi McMahon.
Top eight advanced, McMahon added. "Shiloh has been a strong swimmer all her life and she became our only regional qualifier," McMahon said.
MaGann swam 1:16.67, which was off her top times this season, which hover around 1:15:43.
Top two advance to state from regional, plus an alternate. MaGann knows what she has to do, her coach said.
"Shiloh will be swimming to hit a personal best Friday, which will help her make state," McMahon said. Regional competition is at the Long Center at Tarpon Springs and starts at 9 a.m. Friday.
On the boys side, freshman Ryan Walker, who also plays for Coach Joe Kinan's Hurricane football team, blasted out of his pads and helmet to swim ninth in the 50-freestyle, just missing going to regional.
"Watch for Ryan," McMahon said. "He is going to continue to duel everyone he comes up against. He's someone to look at."
Manatee High finished eighth out of nine teams at district. Braden River, whose individual results were not immediately available, came in seventh, McMahon added.
