• Sept. 28, 2011: Marlins trade Jhan Marinez and Osvaldo Martinez to the White Sox in exchange for the right to hire Ozzie Guillen as manager. Guillen signs a four year, $10 million contract.

• April 4: Marlins lose 4-1 to St. Louis in their opener, the first regular-season game at Marlins Park. The Marlins go 8-14 in April.

• April 6: Time Magazine quotes Guillen as saying: “I love Fidel Castro ... I respect Fidel Castro. You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that [expletive] is still here.” Guillen, asked about the comments, apologizes and says: “I’m sure I’m against [the way] he thinks, the way he treats people and the way he treats his country for a long time.”

• April 10: The Marlins suspend Guillen five games for his Castro comments. Guillen is contrite in a news conference.

• April 17: Guillen returns to the dugout against the Cubs and says: “I don’t think I’m going to change, but I won’t be talking about things that aren’t my business. I hope this mistake makes me a better person.”

• May: Better times for Guillen. The Marlins go 21-8 in May, by far their best month of the season.

• June: Marlins follow their terrific May with an 8-18 swoon in June. On June 26, with his team 34-40, Guillen said he he is ready to “erupt” at his team if they keep losing. “They make me miserable,” he said. “I will make them miserable, too.”

• July 25: Marlins trade Hanley Ramirez to the Dodgers. Guillen says later that he cannot be blamed for Ramirez’s performance because he “hasn’t hit in three, four years.”

• Sept. 15: Guillen blasts ESPN’s Buster Olney on Twitter, alleging Olney suggested the Marlins don’t play hard. Olney actually said there’s “a perception among some rival evaluators that the team has not been competitive.”

• Sept. 21: Guillen addresses rumors he might be fired: “If Jeffrey [Loria] doesn’t think I’m doing the job I should do,... it’s not the first time he has fired a manager. Look yourself in the mirror and ask why so many [bleeping] managers come through here.”

• Sept. 24: Reliever Heath Bell tells WQAM-560 that “it’s hard to respect a guy that doesn’t tell you the truth or doesn’t tell you to your face.” He later apologizes to Guillen, who says he respects Bell as a player but isn’t sure he respects him as a person.

• Sept. 28: Guillen makes a case to keep his job, saying: “I think it would be unfair if they fire me after one chance.”

• Oct. 3: On the final day of the season, Guillen said he expects “100 percent” to be back.

• Oct. 23: Marlins fire Guillen after a 69-93 season. “I don’t think it’s any one thing. It’s all cumulative,” Marlins president/baseball operations Larry Beinfest said.
