Bradenton Police and Manatee County EMS workers give emergency treatment to an injured bicyclist on First Street East.

BRADENTON - A 41-year-old Bradenton man has died of injuries he sustained late Monday afternoon when he was hit riding a bike across First Street East at the intersection of 10th Avenue East, police said.

Police have not released the identity of the man. The man, however, was identified as Brandt Fergerson by his brother Abram Byrd, who was riding behind him on a bike when the accident occurred.

Fergerson was rushed to Blake Medical Center after his bike was hit by a Chevrolet sedan as he attempted to cross First Street East, police said. Fergerson and Byrd were headed west at the time and traffic was stopped at a red light at the intersection. Fergerson was hit by a car in the turn lane, his brother and witnesses said.

County EMS and Bradenton Police Department worked the accident. Fergerson was given emergency treatment at the scene. Capt. Warren Merriman of the Bradenton Police Department said the accident victim later died at the hospital.

"I can't believe it, I can't believe it. He was suppose to be home in a few minutes," said Angela Smith, the victim's girlfriend.

Traffic was backed up on First Avenue East as a result of the accident.
