Two days before a Miami Dade College West Campus parking garage collapsed, the building was struck by a crane, according to the contractor constructing the building.

William Byrne, president of Ajax Building Corp., acknowledged the incident during a news conference Friday.

He said the crane struck a garage column in the outer portion of the building, but did not say if the impact happened in the quadrant that collapsed. He said inspectors checked the building and crane and determined work could resume.

“It’s too early to determine what caused the collapse,” Byrne said. “Speculation does not help the process. Now we need to let OSHA (the Occupational Safety and Health Administration) do their job.”

The five-story garage in Doral collapsed just before noon Wednesday, killing three workers and injuring numerous others. Authorities have yet to pull out a fourth man who remains trapped in the rubble, but have said they are now considering the search a recovery effort.

The incident is under investigation.
