UPCOMING EVENTS

Oct. 11: The Manatee County Parks and Recreation Department has announced the formation of the 2012 Winter Adult Co-Ed Kickball League. The league play will begin on Friday nights starting on Nov. 2. G.T. Bray park and Lakewood Ranch Park each will have a league with multiple divisions. All teams will play an eight game regular season followed by a single-elimination playoffs tournament. The team registration fee is $400.00, which includes team shirts for a roster of up to 20 players. An informational meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 11 at the G.T. Bray Park Recreation Center, 5502 33rd Ave. Drive W., Bradenton. Registration will be held from Oct. 15-22. Oct. 20: The Firearms Training Institute of Sarasota will host a Concealed Carry Course on Oct. 20 at the AmericInn Hotel Conference Room, 5931 Fruitville Road Sarasota. The class starts at 8 a.m. The course will be taught by local NRA Certified Instructors and cover the basics of safe gun handling and shooting. The four-hour course will emphasize the safe and proper handling and use of pistols. Participants will learn about firearm safety, parts and operation, shooting fundamentals, maintenance, storage options and much more. This course meets the Florida training requirements for Concealed Carry Permit applicants. Non-residents are also eligible. Oct. 27: The Mangrove Coast Fly Fishers and Sarasota Chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association will hold their eighth annual Fall Fly Fishing Challenge on Oct. 27. The catch, photo and release event will feature an Open Division for guides and anglers fishing with guides (all anglers are eligible to compete in the Open Division} and a Fly Angler Division (no guides). In the Open Division, eligible species include snook, redfish and spotted seatrout. Those in the Fly Angler Division will fish for a variety of species, including snook, redfish, spotted seatrout, bluefish, ladyfish, flounder, snapper, jack crevalle, pompano and permit based on a points-per-inch system. The entry fee is $50 and includes an awards barbecue at Ken Clark Auditorium, 3000 Ringling Blvd., Sarasota. Tournament applications are available at area tackle shops or online at http://ccaflorida.org and http://mangrovecoastflyfishers.com. Oct. 30: The Waterlefe Women's Golf Association will sponsor its biennial Fall Invitational Golf Tournament "Spooktacular" at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 30 at Waterlefe Golf & River Club. Players sign up with a partner and will play a better-ball format. The maximum handicap for this flighted event is 36. The entry fee is $65 per player, and the field will be limited to the first 48 teams of two that sign up. Included in the entry fee are a breakfast snack at the Pro92 Shop Grille Room and luncheon at the Waterlefe River Club, plus prizes. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Deadline for entries is Oct. 15.
