Nadine among top 5 longest-lasting storms

Published: October 4, 2012

Little noticed but extraordinarily tenacious, Tropical Storm Nadine finally died on Thursday.

The storm, which wandered across the northern Atlantic Ocean for more than three weeks, wound up cracking the top five longest-lasting tropical systems at 21.75 days, according to the National Hurricane Center.

That put it behind Hurricane Kyle in 2002 at 22 days, Hurricane Inga in 1969 at 24.75 days, Hurricane Ginger at 27.25 days and an unnamed hurricane in 1899 that endured 28 days, according to statistics compiled by University of Miami research scientist Brian McNoldy.

Nadine, which fizzled once early in its life before reforming and looping over the islands of the Azores twice, also tied with Ginger for spending the second-longest time at tropical storm strength alone – 21.25 days.

The last NHC advisory read, “Bye bye Nadine…what a long strange trip it’s been.’’

Forecasters were also tracking a new tropical storm, Oscar, which formed in the Atlantic but was expected to dissolve in a few days and posed no threat to land.
