Names and faces: News about business people in Manatee and Sarasota counties

Steve Padgett has been promoted to vice president of Fawley Bryant. Padgett will lead the company's expansion and generally be engaged in the daily operations. Padgett joined the company in 2001.

Byron Shinn, managing partner of Shinn and Co., has been appointed to chair a Florida Institute of CPAs committee to help draft legislation to reduce identity theft and tax fraud.

Michele Strauss has been appointed director of development for major gifts and campaigns for the Van Wezel Foundation. Strauss previously served as CEO of the Royal Palm Players in Boca Grande. She also has held positions in event planning, marketing, acting and directing.

Dr. Krista Cournoyer, a licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist, has joined Dr. Quintal & Associates. Dr. Cournoyer provides assessment, counseling and treatment for behavioral, emotional and learning disorders in children, adolescents and adults. She specializes in the assessment of learning disabilities, attention and concentration challenges mood and anxiety difficulties, and autism spectrum disorders.

Wagner Realty agent Sandy French was awarded the status of Realtor Emeritus from the National Association of Realtors. At a luncheon at River Strand Country Club, Leslie Wells, 2012 president of the Manatee Association of Realtors, presented French with a bouquet of yellow roses, a special pin and a plaque commemorating the event. Emeritus Status is granted after 40 cumulative years as a member of the national association. French was a founding member of the Manatee Women's Council of Realtors and was named Realtor of the Year in 1990.

Nick Figlow has joined Wagner Realty. Figlow is a licensed broker and certified instructor and has been with Re/Max, Keller Williams and Prudential realty firms. He also served as president of the Sarasota Association of Realtors and a director of both the Florida and National Associations of Realtors.

Jose D. Estigarribia has joined the law firm of Porges, Hamlin, Knowles & Hawk. Estigarribia most recently served as a non-equity partner at the firm of Kallins, Little, Delgado & Estigarribia. Estigarribia, who obtained his law degree from Stetson University College of Law in 2002, has primary areas of practice in family law, personal injury, criminal law, immigration and naturalization law, and litigation.

Realtor Denny Thomas has joined the University Parkway Office of Re/Max Alliance Group as a buyer specialist with the Avery-Ayers & Associates team. He has been a music teacher for 25 years and served as a worship pastor for 15 years. He teaches music at the Tabernacle Christian School.

Dr. Juan Sanchez-Ramos has joined The Parkinson Research Foundation and will begin seeing patients in September at Parkinson Place. A professor of neurology at the University of South Florida, he will be the first fellowship-trained movement disorders specialist in Sarasota.

Dr. Antonio Toscano de Brito has been named curator of the Orchid Research Center at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. His duties will include researching selected orchid species, publishing scientific and popular articles, identifying plants, building Selby's living and preserved collections and giving lectures on plant research. He began work at Selby Gardens on the Global Plants Initiative project, funded by the Mellon Foundation, in April 2011.

Chief Operating Officer John Nicholas with Kerkering, Barberio & Co. and Chief Administrative Officer Tracy O'Neill have been awarded the association-certified accredited administrator in accounting practice management by the Association for Accounting Administration.

Successful Women Aligning Together Manasota Chapter has selected Michele Postell of Junk-King as the Woman of the Month, and the Lakewood Ranch Chapter has selected Debra Fortosis of Elite Family Care as the Woman of the Month.

Joseph W. Scheffler, an employee of NaturZone Pest Control, was recently certified as an associate entomologist by the Entomological Society of America Certification Corp. To achieve ACE status, a pest-control operator must have a minimum of seven years of verifiable pest management experience, the knowledge and ability to pass a rigorous test on insect pest control, and a current U.S. pesticide applicators license.

Michelle Mohr has joined Manatee Sarasota Eye Clinic as outreach coordinator. Mohr is a graduate of the University of South Florida with a degree in business administration. Mohr now handles the community outreach programs for all seven offices in Manatee and Sarasota counties, as well as Sun City Center.
