Lakewood Ranch Mustangs prevail over Braden River Pirates again, 21-7

LAKEWOOD RANCH -- More than 5,000 fans came to see if the Braden River football team could end its frustration against arch rival Lakewood Ranch, but what they got was a sequel.

The host Mustangs got some highlight reel performances from some unexpected sources in rolling to a 21-7 victory over Braden River to continue their dominance over the Pirates.

The biggest surprise came from freshman running back Ashawn Angell. He had never played in a high school football game before and didn't carry the ball until the third quarter.

But the third time he touched the ball Angell electrified the stunned crowd that included famed ESPN college basketball analyst and Lakewood Ranch resident Dick Vitale.

The speedy ninth-grader made everybody in his path miss and scampered 50 yards for a touchdown that broke a 7-7 deadlock with 1:03 left in the third quarter.

In the final period, sophomore quarterback Chad Rex broke free for a 53-yard touchdown that sealed the game and gave the Mustangs another win over the Pirates, who did not have a player on their roster who had ever beaten Lakewood Ranch in football.

It was a festive night with fans lining the fences in what will probably turn out to be one of the biggest crowds of the season. Unfortunately for Braden River, it was another loss to its rival on the football field.
