MANATEE -- Two people were arrested after they led law enforcement in a pursuit in a stolen truck through west Bradenton Sunday evening, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

About 9:25 p.m., deputies spotted a truck heading east on Cortez Road at 75th Street West that had earlier been reported stolen in Holmes Beach, according to a news release.

When deputies tried to stop the truck in the 5900 block of Cortez Road, a brief pursuit started, winding through the nearby area with speeds never exceeding 70 mph, according to the sheriff's office.

The truck came to a stop in the 4000 block of 61st Street West. Two passengers were detained, and the driver fled. However, he was located shortly afterwards at a nearby home, according to the report.

Deputies learned from Holmes Beach police that the driver, Michael C. Reid, 28, had befriended the truck's owner while on the beach, and had been able to steal their keys and a gun. The passengers were not involved in the theft, according to the sheriff's office.

Reid was arrested on charges of motor vehicle theft, weapons possession by a felon, fleeing to elude, resisting arrest and other charges. He was being held at the Manatee County jail on bonds totaling $19.750.
