Names and faces: News about business people in Manatee and Sarasota counties

The Board of Directors at Community Haven for Adults and Children with Disabilities, Inc. has appointed Marla Doss as the new president and CEO. Doss has been with Community Haven since 1985 and has been the director of community living and development director.

Dr. Anita Shane has joined Manatee Sarasota Eye Clinic. Dr. Shane is a board-certified and fellowship-trained retina specialist and vitreo-retinal surgeon. Previously she was with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.

Jesse Biter, CEO of Biter Enterprises, was recently appointed by Speaker of the House Dean Cannon to serve a three-year term on the Enterprise Florida Board.

A Sarasota resident, Biter started Biter Enterprises in 2007. He will serve as one of 12 board members representing Florida's private sector.

Morgan J. Bettes has been selected as one of 20 national 2012 Judith O'Connor Scholars. Bettes of Bradenton is currently employed with Realize Bradenton as a creative fellow and also serves as a special assistant to the board director of Season of Sculpture. The Judith O'Connor scholarships enable emerging nonprofit leaders to participate in the annual BoardSource Leadership Forum.

Jo Ann Koontz of the Koontz & Associates law firm in Sarasota has been selected to serve on the faculty for the 2012 Florida Symposium for Financial Planning Professionals.

The symposium by the Financial Planning Association of Tampa Bay presents cutting-edge sessions on a wide variety of financial planning topics.

David W. Young, principal of DWY Landscape Architects, was presented with the Environmental and Sustainability Honor for the Center for Building Hope by the Florida Chapter of the American Association of Landscape Architects during its annual conference in St. Augustine. DWY also received an Award of Honor in institutional design for this project in addition to awards of both Merit and Excellence in Residential Design for projects in Bird Key and Boca Grande.

Melissa Span was recently honored with a five years of service award from First Bank. Span is a financial services representative at First Bank's Brandon branch, 7051 Manatee Ave. W.

Len Tabicman has been reappointed president of the board of directors of HOPE Family Services. Tabicman is a retired school psychologist and chair or the Florida Retirement Commission.

Other executive committee members newly elected include Twila Averill, branch manager of First Bank as vice

president; Tom Salisbury, comptroller, Manatee County Sheriff's Office as treasurer and Dr. Judy Smith, director of quality assurance and regulatory affairs for Florida Blood Services as secretary. Five new board members were added. They are Daniel J. Friedrich, III, Mirinda Hill, Michelle Lee, Dr. Sarah Mackie, and Susan Timmins.

Claudia Meyer has recently been presented with the Re/Max Hall of Fame Award, which honors successful agents who have earned more than $1 million in commissions during their careers with the company. In 2011, only less than 2 percent of all Re/Max affiliates earned the award.

Meyer is a certified luxury home marketing specialist, certified distressed property expert, accredited buyer's representative and graduate of the Realtor Institute.

Realtor Jodi Bryan has returned to Re/Max Alliance Group as a member of the Nicki Conway Team. Bryan first joined Re/Max in 2003, earning membership into the 100 percent Club in her first year.

Westminster Towers & Shores has promoted Kim McCarthy to director of sales and marketing,

Ericka Morales, director of admissions for health center and Karen Seus as marketing assistant.

Curt Werner has joined the Westminster Towers & Shores sales team as residential assisted living admissions coordinator. Leslie Hannon-Mura was recognized by Westminster Communities of Florida for top sales and highest entrance fee dollars for 2011 West Coast region.

Jeffrey A. Silverstein has joined Sarasota Orthopedic Associates. He specializes in adult hip and knee joint reconstruction, arthroscopy, trauma and general orthopedics.

Kirk-Pinkerton shareholder Leslie Wulfsohn Loftus has been appointed by the city of Sarasota to its board of adjustment. Her current law practice focuses on resolution of family law matters.

Bradenton-area Servpro franchise owners Larry Hibbs, Jeff Vermillion and Rick Love were honored with awards for outstanding revenue performance during the Servpro 43rd annual national convention held recently at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando. Hibbs was honored with the Millionaire's Bronze Award, Love was honored with the President's Bronze Award and Vermillion was honored with the Director's Gold Award.

Logan H. Beal of Edward Jones in Northwest Bradenton recently won the firm's Spirit of Partnership Award for outstanding performance during 2012. Beal was one of only 1,100 financial advisers out of the firm's more than 12,000 to receive the award.

Attorney Dana Laganella Gerling has been chosen by her peers as one of Florida's 2012 Legal Elite. The group represents the top 2 percent of attorneys in the state of Florida.

Alfredda Smith-Odato of Re/Max Alliance Group has earned the resort and second-home property specialist certification. The certification is awarded by the National Association of Realtors to real estate professionals who wish to demonstrate and promote to consumers and their peers their expertise in the varied specialty.
