Repairs will be needed at the South Skyway Fishing Pier Road adjacent to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, which took a beating from Tropical Storm Debby, officials said.

The pavement on the west side of the access road from the bridge to the pier is cracked and potholed as a result of the storm, and Thursday, bulldozers were at work there cleaning up.

"Some sections of roadway were eroded by the storm," said Cindy Clemmons, spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Transportation. "The road is open, however, as well as the pier."

The department is awaiting estimates on how much repairs to the roadway might cost, and Clemmons could provide no numbers yet, she said.

Friday, there were numerous spots along the access road on the west side of the bridge roped off with orange barrels and caution tape.

The Skyway was closed for nearly three days during the storm, due to high winds atop the bridge, which connects Manatee County with its northern neighbors.
