MANATEE -- A 61-year-old homeless man late Tuesday was mugged and robbed by two other homeless men, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

About 10:43 p.m., the man was sitting at the bus stop in front of the Sweetbay grocery store at 2501 Cortez Road W., when he was approached by two homeless men he knows from the former BP gas station across the street, according to a news release.

The assailants attacked him and struck him in the face with their fists, before throwing him to the ground. They rummaged through the victim's pockets and took about $5, according to the sheriff's office, before fleeing in an unknown direction.

The victim was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital for treatment of a cut on his elbow.
