MANATEE - John Bowen, whose stint as Manatee school board attorney has been rife with controversy, announced Monday he will retire in June 2013.
Bowen, 69, said his decision is based purely on the fact that he is ready to retire.
"I'm old," he joked after announcing his upcoming retirement. "I've been practicing law since 1972 and representing school districts since 1973. I've enjoyed it."
Bowen said another reason he made his announcement now is because this is traditionally the time if year that the school board decides whether to extend his contract. The board has been working on assessments for Bowen's performance.
