Former Florida State University Heisman Trophy winner and NFL quarterback Chris Weinke will be the first head coach for the new IMG Academy high school football team for the 2013-14 school year. IMG announced the new team on Thursday.

“Through our camps, clinics, combines and individual training, I have spent an incredible two years at IMG Academy working with some of the most talented young football players in the nation” Weinke said in a news release. “I have been looking forward to the day we could announce the formation of a competitive team, and that day is finally here.”

The IMG Madden Football Academy started in the summer of 2010 with several football camps, and has been a stop for recent NFL draft picks such as Ryan Tannehill and Luke Kuechly.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton worked out at IMG with Weinke to refine his skills ahead of his breakout rookie year in 2011.

The new prep team will begin practices in the spring of 2013.
