BRADENTON -- Thirty-two motorcycles escorted the Honor Guard and their vehicle from the Kirby Stewart Post 24 to Fogertyville Cemetery in a memorial procession this morning to honor the legion’s namesake.

Bill Field, Post 24 commander, said the service reflects back to Memorial Day’s predecessor, Decoration Day.

“People used to go to the gravesite -– that’s where heroes are,” Field said.

Field led the funeral service for Stewart and all other fallen service men and women.

“We’re all veterans,” said Marty Leise, who served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. “That just bonds us together in a brotherhood of its own, regardless of branch.”

The group returned to the post for another memorial service where an explanation of the 13 folds of an American flag was given. The folds symbolize facets such as life, remembrance of veterans, tribute to the country, tributes to mothers and fathers and serves as an emblem of eternity.

“I am hopeful one of these days peace will come to the people of this world,” Field said.

Veterans and guests then took part in fellowship over lunch.
