Prep baseball | Canes win; Bruins, Cougars fall in region quarterfinals

The Manatee High baseball team continued its march back toward the state final four with a 3-0 victory Wednesday over Port St. Lucie in a Class 7A-Region 3 quarterfinal at G.T. Bray park. Senior Correlle Prime fired a three-hit shutout, striking out nine and walking three. The Hurricanes will host district rival Venice at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Manatee is 3-1 against the Indians this season, but Venice won the teams' only meeting in Bradenton. Also Wednesday, Bayshore fell 5-0 in a Class 5A-Region 3 quarterfinal at Tampa Jesuit. Tigers pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. shut out the Bruins. In Sarasota, Cardinal Mooney fell 8-2 to Clearwater Calvary Christian in a Class 3A-Region 3 contest.
