BRADENTON Trevor Gooby wears many hats as the Pittsburgh Pirates director of Florida operations.
He can add obstetrician or at least midwife to his list of job-related skills.
Gooby helped Bradenton resident Latasha Kirk deliver a healthy baby boy Tuesday night in a breezeway near the entrance of McKechnie Field during a pre-spring training open house for season-ticket holders and sponsors.
Kirk, a 29-year-old who was about eight months pregnant, said she began experiencing contractions while in the picnic area at McKechnie Field.
While security guards and other Pirates personnel called 911 and scrambled to gather towels and medical equipment, Gooby waited with Kirk, using advice he learned during the birth of his two children to coach her.
He just told me to take some deep breaths and calm down and that help was on the way, Kirk said Tuesday night from a labor-and-delivery room at Manatee Memorial Hospital.
The baby arrived just before an ambulance did, and Gooby was there to make the catch.
It was not a very long wait at all, Gooby said, but she delivered right at the front of McKechnie Field. ... I joked she definitely will have to name the baby Trevor. Hopefully, hell be a Pirate.
I called my wife right away, and she didnt believe me.
A spokesperson at Manatee Emergency Services said the office received a call about a delivery at McKechnie Field at 7:10 p.m. The ambulance transported mother and baby to the hospital.
Kirk, who has two other children ages 3 and 1, had not named the baby Tuesday night. She and her boyfriend, whom she said warned her not to attend Tuesdays open house, each have ideas for the boys name.
The name will not be Trevor, though Kirk said she is grateful for Goobys assistance. Kirk and her boyfriend are season-ticket holders, but they had not met Gooby before the open house.
We were all in awe to be part of this tonight, said Gooby, who is preparing for his eighth spring training in Bradenton. It sure puts spring training in perspective.
